COLLEGE PLACE -- Walla Walla University fell behind 13-0 at the outset here Sunday afternoon in a men's college basketball game.

The deficit grew to 25 points in the second half before the Wolves managed a late charge in losing 87-78 to visiting Portland Bible College.

"That early run to begin the game killed us," WWU coach Gerry Larson said. "I was really disappointed in our start to the game. Guys just didn't come ready to play."

It was the second game in less than 24 hours for the Wolves, who defeated American Sports University of San Bernadino, Calif., 91-78 here Saturday night. The Wolves' record, which includes a recent forfeit victory over Northwest Christian College, now stands at 9-14.

Walla Walla returns to action Saturday at Multnomah Bible College and then returns home one week from tonight against West Coast Baptist College.

Portland Bible led 17-2 in the first six minutes Sunday before the scoring of 6-foot-6 freshman post Ryan Spady, brought the Wolves roaring back.

In the next 10 minutes of the first half, the Wolves outscored the Wildcats 26-14, to close the lead to five points.

Portland Bible then went on a 10-3 run to close the half and took a 43-31 lead into the intermission.

Spady scored 16 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the floor and 8-of-10 shooting from the line in the first 20 minutes. He also ripped nine of his 10 boards in the first half,

As a team, WWU only shot 39 percent from the floor in the first half.

"We didn't shoot very well in first half," Larson said. "We could have made more of our 3-pointers; we had a couple of wide open shots that we missed. It was frustrating."

In half one, WWU made just 1-of-5 3-pointers.

In the game, the Wolves were 4-of-14 from downtown, 29 percent.

Portland Bible hit 13-of-23 shots from behind the arc, 56 percent for the game.

Junior guard Jonny Long led the Wolves in 3-pointers with two, scoring 15 points and handling the ball for WWU.

"Long didn't shoot as well as he normally does," Larson said. "He did alright, though, and handled the ball well for us."

Another guard that scored well for the Wolves was Michael Sprenger with 13 points.

In the second half, Spady was in foul trouble and backup post Tristan Edwards took over inside for WWU.

Edwards scored all 12 of his points after the intermission.

The Wildcats opened the second half on a 13-7 run to open its advantage to 56-38 before Edwards tallied seven points in a four-minute span.

Two minutes later, however, WWU was behind by 25 points before going on a 29-10 run over the game's final 10 minutes.

The Wolves got to within seven points with two minutes remaining, but couldn't get any closer.

"We played a variety of zone defenses, traps and man-pressure alignments," Larson said. "Nothing could really slow down their 3-point shooting enough to get us the win."

In Saturday's victory over American Sports University, Long led the way with 20 points, followed by Dauphin with 16 points and Tristan Edwards with 15.

The Wolves shot an even 50 percent (31-for-62) in the game and were nearly that good from 3-point distance, sinking 10-of-19 shots.

Alvin Ward led the Californians with 18 points and 12 rebounds.
