Edward Harding passed away at his home January 6, 2010 in Walla Walla, Washington.

Ed was born March 7, 1912 in Walla Walla to Jacob & Anna Marie Frick Harding. He grew up on his parents’ two farms, one on Last Chance Road, the other at Wallula & Pine St. Highway. Ed acquired hard work experience from working on the farms and also repairing and fixing various rental homes.

Hard work came naturally to Ed and by the time he was 30 years old, he spotted a ranch while on a fishing trip. It was the most run-down ranch Ed ever saw, but he made up his mind to tackle the project and improve it no matter what it took. After two years, Ed had made amazing changes. He also repeated his efforts with a place in Idaho and after 5 years, Ed made amazing improvements on the Idaho ranch.

After selling the Idaho Ranch, Ed returned to Walla Walla and purchased the Crystal Tavern on West Main. He and his first wife, Evy, built a home and lived there before purchasing property on Taumarson Road and residing there. Evy preceded him in death.

Ed began a new venture with several taverns on the north side of Main Street. The tavern business was a natural for him because he was a people person, got along with the public and was a sensible guy. Ed was always involved with something and it was his goal to update, improve and make better something that was important to him.

He married Clara P. Johnson in Walla Walla on July 10, 1999 and both Ed & Clara have resided at the family home on Taumarson Road. Ed has covered a lot of territory in his business lifetime. He will be missed by family and many longtime friends throughout the Walla Walla Valley.

Ed is survived by his wife, Clara, at the home; 1 daughter, Anita Bower of Richland, WA; 1 stepdaughter, Johnette Manhas of Duncan, British Columbia, Canada; special family friend, Bill Fowler of Federal Way, WA; 3 stepsons, David Alexander of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, Peter Alexander of Brentwood, British Columbia, Canada & Robert A. Johnson of Walla Walla, WA; 3 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild and numerous nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; 1st wife, Evelyn Harding; 1 brother, Jacob Harding; 7 sisters, Katie, Molly, Helen, Martha, Naome, Marie & Dorothy and 1 stepson, Tom Alexander.

Viewing and visitation will be held at the Herring Groseclose Funeral Home on Sunday, January 10, 2010 from 1:00 PM until 5:00 PM.
