Mary Melissa Pengelly of 240 SE 17th, Milton-Freewater, Oregon, passed away January 10, 2010 at the Providence St. Mary Medical Center in Walla Walla at the age of 78 years. A memorial service will be held on Friday, January 15, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at the Valley Christian Center in Milton-Freewater, Oregon. A potluck will follow at the church.
Mary M. Pengelly was born on March 25, 1931, the daughter of James and Myrtle (Hixson) Pearce in La Grande, Oregon. Mary attended schools in Pendleton, Oregon graduating from Pendleton High School with the class of 1947. In 1948, she married Merlin Pengelly, the marriage later ended in divorce. Mary was later married to William Bade in 1991, but only for a short time. She was a devoted mother of six and a foster mother of many. Mary devoted her life to the mentoring, care and upbringing of the children who came into her life. Mary enjoyed going on boat cruises, spending quiet days at the cabin, mining for gold and rock collecting, soaking in the Lehman Hot Springs and playing Miss Pac Man in the arcade with her grandchildren. She truly loved all people.
One of nine children, she is survived by sisters Lela Warner of Milton-Freewater, Loraine Bade of North Platt, Nebraska, brother, Bill Pearce of Echo, Oregon; her children Merlin and Marti Pengelly Jr. of Umatilla, Oregon, Wayne and Susie Pengelly of Phoenix, Arizona, Michael and Janet Pengelly of Phoenix, Arizona, Mark and Jewel Pengelly, her caregiver of the last six years of Milton-Freewater, Oregon, Kathryne Pengelly of Bellevue, Washington; Lisa and Pat Clayton of Shoreline, Washington and Sarah and Ben (Bade) Bergman of Walla Walla, Washington; she blessed the world with 12 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
Her parents and other siblings all preceded her in death.
