Balanced attack produces UPS men's win over Missionaries

Puget Sound shoots nearly 60 percent from the floor in the 88-66 victory over Whitman Saturday.

TACOMA — Shooting nearly 60 percent from the floor, defending Northwest Conference champion Puget Sound handed the Whitman College men an 88-66 basketball loss here Saturday afternoon.

The Loggers, who struggled to start the season, improved to 2-4 in the NWC and 6-9 overall.

Whitman fell to 3-3 and 9-6.

Up 47-32 at intermission, the Loggers scored the first four points of the second half and never let the Missionaries back into the ballgame.

Puget Sound erased a 4-3 Whitman lead at the outset of the first half with a 14-0 run that included 3-pointers by three different players.

Whitman sophomore Brandon Shaw led all scorers with 23 points. He was seven of 11 from the floor and picked off five rebounds and two steals.

Shaw was the only Missionary scoring in double figures. Whitman hit just 28 percent of its shots in the second half and finished the night at 33.9 percent.

Jordan Wheeler, finished with nine points and Drew Raher was good for eight points and six boards.

With 18 points and six rebounds, senior Colin Roach was one of four Loggers scoring in double figures. Puget Sound also got 17 points from Kaleb Shelton, 13 from Nadav Heyman and 11 from Bryce Levin.

Whitman returns to the road on Tuesday for an 8 p.m. game against Whitworth in Spokane.
