Blue Devils hold off Riverhawk upset bid for a 64-58 win

PASCO — Wa-Hi pulled off its third Big Nine Cascade Division boys basketball victory in four days here Saturday night.

The Blue Devils went nip and tuck with Chiawana through three periods and emerged with a 64-58 win at the final buzzer.

The Riverhawks and Blue Devils played to nine lead changes as Chiawana led 18-15 after one quarter, but Wa-Hi took a 36-34 lead to intermission.

The Blue Devils stretched the lead to 48-45 going to the last eight minutes.

The Riverhawks clawed back to get within two with a little over a minute left. Seth Alden buried a trey from the corner to give the Blue Devils a five-point cushion.

Gary Winston completed his 24-point performance by hitting 3-of-4 free throws the rest of the way, and Wa-Hi pulled out the 64-58 win to improve to 5-1 in the division and remain atop the Cascade Division standings.

Jordan Downing and Miqulyah Zamora lit it up for the Riverhawks as Chiawana, coming in at 2-3, made its upset bid.

Downing led all scorers with 29 points, and Zamora went for 17.

"They (Chiawana) played very well," Wa-Hi coach John Golden said. "We had a hard time stopping Downing. We gave up offensive rebounds, and they threw a different defense at us, which is getting to be common.

"We didn’t shoot well (25-of-62) from the floor," Golden continued. "Our third game in four days had something to do with that."

Michael Weisner added 22 points, including four treys, to the Blue Devil effort and grabbed a team leading nine boards.

"Michael did some great things for us," Golden said. "He kept us in it in the first half."

Seniors Ryan James and Colton Arias each scored four points in the decisive fourth period run to spark Wa-Hi to a 16-13 edge in the quarter, and help preserve the win.

"Our senior leadership showed," Golden said. "We battled (at the end), got a stop, and hit a couple (of shots). We persevered."

There is no rest for the weary as Wa-Hi travels to Yakima Monday to play West Valley at 5 p.m. at the SunDome in the annual Martin Luther King Day Tournament.
