TOUCHET — Junior post Matt Kates of Touchet scored 16 points and had seven boards to lead the Indians over Lacrosse-Wastucna, 41-37, in Southeast B District action.

Guard Jake Hodnefield added six points, four steals and grabbed 12 boards.

"Jacob had a solid night for us on defense and on the boards," Touchet coach Tim McKeown said.

Another notable contributor was Michael Valencia, who had six points and seven boards.

"Everyone played well tonight, the starters and the guys off the bench," McKeown said. "On defense, we played real well. We kept our guys in front of us and pressured them throughout the night."

Touchet jumped out to a 14-7 lead in the first quarter and led throughout the game.

The early run was a true team effort, with five different players making one hoop.

Kates would spread out his scoring, six in the first half and 10 in the second half.

The halftime score was 25-18 Touchet.

Lacrosse-Wastucna made a run at Touchet 8-5 in the third period to cut the lead to 30-26.

Down the stretch, the Wildcats were forced to foul with limited time remaining, and the Indians hit on 3-of-5 free throws to seal the victory.

"Late in the game, the free throws won it for us," McKeown said. "The kids played real smart, they didn’t foul and were patient with the ball. They looked for a good shot and had good clock management."

Junior forward Jeff Zimmer did most of the scoring for the Wildcats with 18 points and also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

Jeff Zimmer also had three blocks and two steals.

"I thought we played real relaxed and confident when defending the big guy (Jeff Zimmer)," McKeown said. "We keyed on him and did a better job in the first half then the second half."

Zimmer scored only six points in the first half and then 12 in the second half.

Touchet outrebounded Lacrosse-Wastucna, 30-25.

The Indians got five of the team’s nine assists from Marshall Byerley.
