Touchet girls take care of Wildcats

Balanced scoring and rebounding helps the Indians to the 47-41 victory Saturday night.

TOUCHET — The balanced scoring attack and rebounding of the Touchet girls basketball team powered the Indians to a 47-41 victory over Lacrosse-Wastucna here Saturday night in a Southeast B District matchup.

The Indians outrebounded the Wildcats, 42-29.

"Our posts were aggressive tonight," Touchet coach Scott Pumphrey said. "All of them had their moments on the rebounding and scoring. Everyone did a good job."

Zoe Weaver was the leading rebounder and scorer for Touchet with 11 boards and 14 points.

Carley Frazier added nine points and eight rebounds. Emily Huesby chipped in eight points and had nine boards.

ReAna Butler had six of her eight points on offensive rebounds and putbacks. She had seven total rebounds — four offensive.

Cheyenne Kessler had four points in the fourth, on two offensive rebounds and key putbacks.

The Indians fought back and took the lead by one point for the final time on Kessler’s offensive rebound and layup with 1:40 remaining in the game.

"I had to fight really hard for the rebounds and shots," Kessler said, "because the other girls around me were bigger than me."

Butler made the first of two free throws with 35 seconds remaining. Kessler rebounded the miss and put it back up for two points to give the Indians the four-point lead with 32 seconds remaining.

The Wildcats were unable to score on their next possession, and Frazier rebounded the miss and was fouled. She sealed the victory with seven seconds remaining with two free throws on the penalty bonus.

The Indians got out to a 13-0 lead after the first quarter.

Weaver scored five points in the first period, and Butler had four points.

"We jumped on them early," Pumphrey said. "Give them credit, they fought back as we let down after the first quarter. The Wildcats got Della Fleming going on the inside and hit some outside shots."

The second quarter was started on a 13-0 run by the Wildcats to tie the game.

Touchet responded with a 7-2 run to end the second, and held the 20-15 halftime edge.

The Wildcats’ Fleming scored 9 of her 13 points in the second half, to go along with 12 boards for the game.

Gladys Martinez added 13 points on two 3-pointers and had seven boards for L-W.

Touchet led throughout the game until the six-minute mark in the third period.

The Wildcats took a 21-20 lead on a 3-pointer by Martinez.

L-W would lead by as many as five points before the Indians came back.

The Wildcats led 34-29 with seven minutes remaining in the fourth.

Then, Liza Pedroza made a fastbreak layup, Weaver got a steal in the backcourt and made a layup, plus-one to make it 34-34 with 5:30 remaining.

Fleming scored inside to take back the lead, and then Pedroza of the Indians hit a shot from the corner to tie it back up.

Huesby scored in the paint and then Taylor Burke hit a jumper for the Wildcats.

The seesaw match continued as Frazier drove to the hoop for two and Martinez hit a 3-pointer to take a one-point lead.

Kessler then took over with inside rebounding and scoring to go with the free throws.

The Indians won and improved their record to 6-7 overall and 3-2 in the South Division.

"I was proud of the way our girls responded in the fourth quarter," Pumphrey said. "We did the little things, made our free throws and got the rebounds to secure the victory."
