Wa-Hi girls drops close one to league favorite Chiawana

PASCO — One night after knocking off previously unbeaten Richland in Richland, the Wa-Hi Blue Devil girls set their sights on division-leading and unbeaten Chiawana here Saturday.

With a chance to win in the waning seconds, the Blue Devils’ rally fell just short and Chiawana escaped with a 38-33 victory.

Trailing one with a few ticks remaining, Wa-Hi fouled. Chiawana converted both shots, leaving the Blue Devils three seconds to inbounds and drive for a desperation trey. That chance never came as the Riverhawks stole the Blue Devils’ inbound pass and layed up a final two points at the buzzer.

"It was an extremely physical game," Wa-Hi coach Jill Meliah said. "Being on the road two nights in a row started to show. We battled hard. We stayed in the game even when our offense didn’t produce.

"It was just a defensive battle," she said. "Both teams played great defense. I was really proud of us. We decided to focus on stopping (Hayley) Hodgins and (Mikaela) Rivard. It just happened that (Sadie) Sparks stepped up for them tonight."

Blue Devil Jamie Weisner led all scorers with 22, and all rebounders with 13.

"Their game plan was to try and stop Weisner," Meliah said. "Ellsworth fouled out trying to stop her. Jamie is a special player and it’s going to take someone equally as special to take her on."

Jill McDaniels added nine points for the Blue Devils, including two 3-pointers, before being knocked out of the game in the fourth quarter with a deep gash over her eye. Meliah expected McDaniels to have stitches.

The loss drops Wa-Hi to 6-6 overall, 3-3 in league.

The Blue Devils play again Monday against West Valley in the Yakima’s SunDome.
