ASOTIN — Asotin built a 42-29 first-half lead and held on for a 61-58 Southeast B District boys basketball victory over Waitsburg-Prescott here Saturday.

The loss gives W-P an 8-3 record ovderall.

Ben Kiefel led W-P with 18 points, and Wyatt Withers chipped in 13.

Ben Servatius led the Panthers with a game-high 25 points.

W-P battled back in the second half, outscoring the Panthers 10-6 in the third quarter and 19-13 in the final eight minutes, but could not overcome the first-half deficit.

"It began with them being unconscious," W-P coach T.J. Scott said. "They hit the first four 3s they took, and we were missing layins.

"We would have hung pretty close but we were missing our bunnies," he continued. "We didn’t get out on shooters in the first half. At one point we got down 33-13. We came back and cut it to 13 at half. We cut it to five in the third quarter.

"In the fourth quarter, we got it back to five. Then Kiefel hit a big 3-pointer that cut it to two," Scott said.

"Then we had to foul with 10 seconds to play."

Asotin’s Servatius made the first free throw, but missed the second. W-P grabbed the rebound and drove the court, where a wide open James Lehr waited in the corner. Lehr’s three rimmed out however, and the Panthers held on for the victory.

"No one has hurt us before hitting 3s like that," Scott said. "We came out tight and it snowballed on us.

"I was proud of the way we battled back," he said. "We had a real good team effort. Withers, Kiefel, Chance McDaniel and Zach Bartlow played well."

Bartlow is coming back from a high ankle sprain after missing four games during the last two weeks.

W-P plays again at DeSales on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
