Joan Carolyn Ireland of Milton-Freewater died Jan. 11, 2010, at Regency at the Park in College Place.She was 79. A memorial service will be held on Jan. 23 at 2 p.m. atthe Eastgate Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Walla Walla.
Joan was born July 29, 1930, in Jenkins, Minn.Due to the death of her birth mother, she was placed in an orphanage and at age 4 was adopted byHerbert C. and Myrtle J. (Kirk) Krogstad. She spent her childhood in Minnesota and Michigan, and when she was 14 the family moved to Auburn, Wash., where she attended and graduated from Auburn Academy.
Joan attended Walla Walla College and Paradise Valley Hospital School ofNursing in San Diego, Calif. In 1965 Joan married Larry E. Ireland, who she had met at Boeing in Seattle, where both were employed.During the course of their marriage, Joan and Larry lived in College Place, Hinkley, Minn., and Portland, Woodburn and Salem, Ore.Joan worked for a number of different businesses,mostly performing secretarial work. She also devoted a number of years in her home caring for her sickly mother.
Perhaps the highlight of Joan's accomplishments was writing and in 1995having published a book telling the story of Mary, the mother of Jesus, called "My Beloved Son."The book was later re-pubished by a different company under the name of "Mary, Mother of Jesus."
The main focus of Joan's life was her family; her husband Larry was the center of her world and she cared deeply for her children and grandchildren.She also had a number of dear friends, too many to mention here, several of whom called her and Larry Mom and Dad or Grandma andGrandpa. She loved people and would do anything within her power to helpsomeone else.
Joan was an avid reader and enjoyed writing as well.She also loved catsand almost always had one or more; after the death of her husband she adopted one whom she named Sherlock.She often said she didn't know whatshe would do without his companionship.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Mary Regional Cancer Center or BlueMountain Humane Society through Herring-Groseclose Funeral Home.
Joan is survived by her two children and their spouses, Carole and Dennis Lepiane of College Place, and Kevin and Angelic Ireland ofMilton-Freewater; and two grandchildren, Jaymie Lepiane of Yakima and Ashlin Ireland of Milton-Freewater.Also surviving are siblings and their spouses Wayne and Helyn Pickett of Maples, Minn., and Donna and Dave Bollie of Fifty Lakes, Minn.She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and several siblings.
