Gaynor S. Derby

May 8, 1947 – Jan. 17, 2010

Gaynor S. Derby died peacefully at his home on Jan. 17, 2010. Gaynor was born May 8, 1947. The third son of Clarence W. and Estelle Margaret Smith Derby. He attended Edison Elementary School, Garrison Junior High, graduating in 1965 from Wa-Hi. After graduation from Eastern Washington University (Cheney), he was employed by the John Deere Company, where he was the youngest District Manager up to that time for John Deere. Following his tenure at John Deere, he built his own successful auto tire and accessory business.

When the Corkrum & Derby Ranch decided to plant wine grapes in 1993, Gaynor was called upon to manage the venture. He successfully managed this 45 acre vineyard as well as the planting and operating of an additional 70 acre vineyard at Spring Valley, 10 years later. Gaynor retired in 2008, to enjoy camping and fishing with his family. Too soon after his retirement, liver and kidney health problems overtook him. Gaynor’s former Spring Valley employer, Ste. Michelle Wine Estates, stepped forward to make it possible for him to undergo treatment
at Loma Linda Medical Center in California. When the treatment could not be completed, Gaynor decided to return to Walla Walla. He was grateful for the kindness and care he received from the people at Ste. Michelle Wine Estates, the doctors and nurses at St. Mary Hospital in Walla Walla, Loma Linda Medical Center, Walla Walla Community Hospice, as well as he is friends and family.

Gaynor and Annette Myers were married, Nov. 7, 2008, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Walla Walla. Annette was his dearly loved wife, friend, and, in his final days, his beloved care giver.

He was at peace and in the company of Annette, Sunday night when he passed into the arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus.

Gaynor is survived by his wife, Annette, at the home; daughter, Shannon Derby; grandson Jaydan Young, Seattle; brothers, Dr. Al Derby and sister-in-law, Karean Derby, Spokane, Dean Derby and sister-in-law, Shari Corkrum Derby, Walla Walla; nieces, DeAnn Derby Elvin, St. Paul, Minn, Dr. Lynn Derby, Spokane; nephew, Lance Derby, Spokane.
