WALLA WALLA — Pat Richard scored a game-high 27 points, including nine in overtime, to lead DeSales to a 57-50 victory over Mac-Hi in non-conference boys basketball action Tuesday night at the Irish gym.

Richard forced the extra period by knocking down a 3-point basket with five seconds left that evened the score at 45-45.

"Our guys came out with a much more complete effort," DeSales coach Mike Giusti said. "It was a great basketball game to be a part of."

Ryley Croghan scored five points and Kendall Brown added four as Mac-Hi built a 13-4 lead over the ice-cold Irish after one quarter. DeSales made just 2-of-15 shots from the field in period one.

The Pioneers connected on 6-of-13 floor shots in the second quarter to grow their lead to 10, 26-16, by halftime. Will Riley set the pace with five points while Croghan and Jake Knight delivered four points apiece.

Richard and Sean Williams both had three points in the third quarter as the Irish closed the gap to seven, 33-26, by the end of the period.

Mac-Hi shot just 25 percent in the frame (3-of-12).

DeSales tied the score at 42-42 on a Richard basket with 42 seconds remaining in the final quarter.

Croghan made one of three free throws to break the tie with 15.1 seconds to go, and Brown added two more freebies with 13.3 seconds on the clock.

Richard followed with his 3 — a straight-on bomb from 23 feet — that sent the game into a fifth period.

The Irish took command in the first minute of overtime. A three-point play by Richard with 3:12 showing on the clock shattered the 45-all stalemate.

"Mac-Hi’s kids played their guts out," Giusti said. "I’m happy with this."

The Pioneers had three players in double figures led by the 15 of Knight. Croghan had 13 and Riley scored 11.

Brown grabbed a game-high 19 rebounds.

Mac-Hi shot 31 percent from the field (20-of-64), 21 percent from outside the arc (3-of-14) and made just seven of 12 free throws. The Pioneers committed 26 turnovers.

"We gave ‘em that one on a silver platter," Mac-Hi coach Nick Ellis said. "You’re not going to win any ball games with (26) turnovers. We didn’t need to force the ball, made very poor decisions and didn’t make any easy shots. We had chances to win in regulation."

"DeSales did what they had to do," Ellis said. "Pat’s 3 at the end was huge. Give him credit."

The Irish host Waitsburg-Prescott Friday. The Pioneers welcome Baker to the Mac-Hi gym on Saturday.
