Whitman's Charlotte Graham named NWC Women's Swimmer of Week

WALLA WALLA — First-year swimmer Charlotte Graham, who helped the Whitman College women’s team run its Northwest Conference dual meet record to 5-0 last weekend, has been named NWC Student Athlete of the Week for women’s swimming.

In Friday’s 125-80 victory over Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Graham placed first in the 200-yard freestyle (2:00.14) and 500-yard freestyle (5:22.66).

She also swam the anchor leg on Whitman’s winning 400-yard freestyle relay team. She teamed with junior Lauren Flynn and two more first-year Missionaries — Katie Chapman and Helen Jenne — for a first-place time of 3:50.07.

In Saturday’s lopsided 146-50 triumph over Willamette University in Salem, Ore., Graham won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:01.70 and placed second to Jenne in the 50-yard freestyle.

She also swam the opening leg on Whitman’s victorious 200-yard medley relay team, which clocked a time of 2:00.39. Joining Graham in that relay were Flynn, sophomore Monica Boshart and first-year Missionary Sara Behrens.

Earlier last week, Whitman swimmers capped a week-long training session in southern California with a strong showing at the Cal Lutheran Relays in Thousand Oaks. Graham, Flynn and Jenne placed second in the 150-yard freestyle relay, missing the top spot by just four-tenths of a second. The same three swimmers, along with first-year teammate Libby Arnosti, also placed second in the 500-yard freestyle relay.

Whitman has two NWC dual meets left in the regular season, starting at 3 p.m. this Saturday against Whitworth in the Louise and Paul Harvey Pool at Baker Ferguson Fitness Center.
