Walla Walla apartment fire injures occupant, firefighter

A fire that broke out on Francis Avenue this morning also caused about $30,000 in damage.

WALLA WALLA -- City fire crews were dispatched to an early morning fire that seriously damaged an apartment unit and sent two people to the hospital, according to a news release.

The city's Fire Department responded to the fire at 1122 Francis Ave., Apt. 2B, about 3:40 a.m. today. On arrival, crews reported seeing smoke coming from the home, and were able to put the fire under control quickly.

The occupant of the unit, Robert Zanger, was inside the apartment as the fire broke out but was assisted outdoors by a neighbor, Gordon Buley, before firefighters arrived, according to the release.

Zanger was taken to Providence St. Mary Medical Center for treatment. A city firefighter who suffered a minor ankle injury was also taken to St. Mary's, and released after treatment.

The fire caused an estimated $25,000 in structural damage, with an estimated $5,000 in lost contents. The complex is owned by David and Tanya Juhasz, according to the release.

Walla Walla County Fire Disrict 4 responded to assist in the fire. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
