Burt's outburst helps Gar-Pal turn back Pirates

GARFIELD — Gavin Burt scored nine of his game-high 17 points in a three-minute stretch to close out the third quarter as Garfield-Palouse built a 28-16 halftime lead en route to a 46-40 victory over Pomeroy in a Southeast B District Northern Divison boys basketball game here Friday night.

The Pirates battled back in the second half behind Grant Jenkins and Sean Beale, at one point cutting the Vikings’ lead to 36-34 with about four minutes to play. But Pomeroy couldn’t quite overtake Gar-Pal as it suffered its seventh defeat of the season against six victories.

Jenkins who led the Pirates’ offense with 11 points and scored them all after the intermission. Beale scored eight of his 10 points in the final two quarters.

"We couldn’t quite get over the hump," Pomeroy coach Brian Koller said. "We got within two points and then turned it over five times in a row."

Pomeroy matched Garfield-Palouse from the floor but cashed in on only 3-of-9 free-throw opportunities. The Vikings were 10-for-14 from the line.
