Baker's Warner, Burk bury Mac-hi under too deep a first half deficit to climb out

MILTON-FREEWATER — It took a half for Mac-Hi to make the defensive adjustments necessary to slow down Baker’s girls’ offensive juggernaut Saturday. But one half was one half too long, as Mac-Hi’s offense never found the answer to its shooting woes and the Pioneers dropped a 44-30 Greater Oregon League matchup here to the Bulldogs.

Baker, led by Mackenzie Warner’s 18-point night and Tiffany Burk’s 14, scored 30 points in the first half. Mac-Hi, in contrast, only mustered 30 for the game.

"Our offense wasn’t there. We missed easy layins, easy shots and free throws," Mac-Hi coach Curtis Pumphrey said. "It’s pretty hard to come back when you do that."

Sierra Burchell did her best to spark the Pioneer offense, scoring 12 in the losing effort.

"Warner was lighting it up early from outside. She was impressive with her shooting tonight," Pumphrey said. "At halftime, we changed up our defense to a triangle-and-two to slow down Warner and Burk in the second half and it worked."

Mac-Hi held the Bulldogs to six and eight point quarters after the break.

"We’ll be better prepared when we see them again now that we’ve seen them here," Pumphrey said.

The Pioneers next play in another GOL tilt Tuesday at LaGrande.
