Robert Eugene Startin, 85, 618 E. Patit St., Dayton, died Jan. 21, 2010, at his daughter’s home in Umapine. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010, at the family plot in the Dayton City Cemetery with Pastor Greg Brownell officiating. There will be a viewing at 7 p.m Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2010, for family and friends at Hubbard-Rogg Chapel. He was born Dec. 27, 1924, in Potlatch, Idaho. His parents were Sedric and Hazel Kitterman Startin. He came to Dayton with his parents at a young age and attended Dayton schools. He enlisted in the Army during WWII and served in the Philippines and with the occupation forces in Japan.
He married Hazel Mings on Feb. 27, 1947, in a ceremony held in Couer‘d Alene, Idaho. She died in 1997.
Bob worked for Rogers Construction Co. before he entered the service. After he was discharged he became employed with Green Giant Co. in Dayton, retiring 42 years later. He was a member of the American Legion and the Eagles. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and traveling. He made salmon trips to the coast and hunted moose in British Columbia and loved to go to Reno.
He is survived by a daughter, Linda Flint, Umapine; a son, Terry Startin, Spokane; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Joe Startin, Yakima; three sisters, Pat Roy, West Covina, Calif., Joyce Lorenzen, Troutdale, Ore., Shirley Malean, Lynnwood, Wash. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Hazel; sister, Janice Mackliet; and two brothers, Ray and Fay Startin.
