SPOKANE — In a tale of two halves, the real Walla Walla Community College women’s team surfaced in the second to knock off Spokane, 71-59, in an NWAACC East Region counter here Wednesday.

The Warriors trailed by as many as 10 points in the first 20 minutes and by three points at halftime, 38-35.

They outscored the Sasquatch 36-21 in the second half for the winning margin.

Walla Walla is now 5-1 in the East and 16-1 on the season.

"Anytime to win in Spokane, it’s a good win," WWCC coach Bobbi Hazeltine said. "It’s a long trip, and it’s a tough place to play.

"And we did not play well in the first half," she continued. "We were down by 10 at one point. We didn’t have many turnovers, but we didn’t shoot well, and we made some bad decisions.

"We did some things that were out of character for us. So at halftime I talked to the kids about playing like Walla Walla teams play. We came out and had a completely different half."

Layne Tucker led the Warriors with 21 points.

"Layne Tucker was a key to us winning," Hazeltine said. "She finished with 21 points, and most of them came in the second half.

"And Jaimie Berghammer came off the bench (when foul trouble sidelined Nancy Johnson) and got 10 rebounds (a game high)," she said. "We rely on Katie Isham (15 points) and Nancy (10 points, four rebounds), but when they’re having trouble we have to have other players fill in."

Walla Walla outshot Spokane from the floor, 27-for-59 to 21-for-55.

And the Warriors won the rebounding battle, 40-33.

"It’s tough to win in Spokane," Hazeltine said. "This is a big win for us."

Walla Walla returns to action against Big Bend at the Dietrich Dome with a 4 p.m. start on Saturday.
