COLLEGE PLACE — Brad Luce scored 14 points and Marshall Failing added 12 to lead Walla Walla Valley Academy to a 53-38 victory over Pomeroy in a boys high school basketball game here Thursday night.

The Knights led from start to finish and took a 7-2 lead midway through the first period when Failing completed a three-point play at the 3:47 mark.

WWVA twice grew the lead to seven points in the period. The latter time came in the closing seconds on a Caleb Sauerbier tip-in that gave the Knights a 14-7 advantage.

Luce started WWVA on the right foot in the second quarter on a right-wing 3-pointer with 7:30 remaining.

The lead reached double figures, 26-16, with 2:44 left on a Failing free throw.

Michael Hanson made a pair of freebies in the final 31 seconds to increase the Knights’ spread to 12, 28-16, at the halftime break.

Quarter three was a standoff, with each team scoring 13 points. The Knights led by as many as 16 in the quarter.

Failing had four points in the stanza while Pomeroy’s Grant Jenkins tried to keep his team close with five points.

The Pirates did not seriously threaten in the fourth quarter.

WWVA’s margin topped out at 17, 53-36, when reserve Zach Fry made 1-of-2 free throws with 45.6 seconds remaining.

"This was a needed win," WWVA coach Les Balk said. "It’s been a terrible week for us. This was our third game in four nights."

Neither team shot well from the field. The Knights were 17-of-48 (35 percent) and Pomeroy was 15-of-71 (21 percent).

"I was worried our legs would be dead," Balk said. "We knew they were a good-shooting team, but they missed some 3s and we were able to get transition baskets."

"It’s frustrating when you can’t make shots," Pomeroy coach Brian Koller said. "They played good defense.

"Turnovers were an issue," said Koller, whose team coughed up the ball 15 times. "We need to take care of those things."

Both teams go back to work on Saturday. Pomeroy will be at home to face Garfield-Palouse and WWVA hosts Waitsburg-Prescott.
