Mario Curcio, 89, Died at St. Mary Medical Center on January 25th, 2010 of congestive heart failure. He was born December 23, 1920 to Francesco (Frank) Curcio and Carmela Longo Curcio in Walla Walla, WA. At 2 years of age he returned with his parents and older brother to Cosenza, Italy where he was raised and attended schools until the age of 17 when he retuned to Walla Walla.

He served in the United States Army from 1942 – 1945, receiving An Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, Victory Medal & Good Conduct Medal. He was Honorably discharged on December 9th, 1945.

After his service in the Military and upon returning to Walla Walla, he met the love of his life, Margaret Biagi in June of 1946 and married her on January 26th, 1947 at St. Francis Church; they celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary together on January 26th, 1997.

He was a meat cutter employed by Walla Walla Meat & Cold Storage, Albertsons, Fleenors and then retiring from Wade’s Thriftway in 1984.

He was a member of the Walla Walla Elks Club, Knights of Columbus, St. Francis Parish and Walla Walla Veterans Golf Course. He was an avid Golfer until the age of 85.

He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, Church activities and spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren, as he considered them his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 3 brothers, Luigi Curcio, Eduardo Curcio & Amerigo Curcio and his beloved wife Margaret Biagi Curcio. He is survived by a son, Michael Curcio, Kennewick, WA; a daughter & son in-law, Mary and Jarrod Sumerlin; Walla Walla, WA. and 3 grandchildren, Megan Sumerlin, Taylor Sumerlin & Nathan Sumerlin all of Walla Walla, WA. A brother-in-law & sister-in-law, John & Geneva Biagi, of Walla Walla and numerous nieces and nephews.

The Rosary will be held at 6:00 pm on Monday, February 1st, 2010, with Father Tim Hays of Assumption Catholic Church in the Chapel of the Herring Groseclose Funeral Home. Viewing and visitation will be held on Sunday, January 31, 2010 from 1:00 pm until 5:00 pm and Monday from 9:00 am until after Rosary at the Herring Funeral Home. The Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m. at St. Francis Catholic Church on Tuesday,
February 2nd, 2010 with Father Patrick Kerst, Celebrant. Vault interment will follow in the Catholic Section of Mountain View Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary Regional Cancer Center; Walla Walla Catholic Schools or the charity of choice through the funeral home.
