Stanford's big 3 barrage not enough as Ontario beats Mac-Hi by two

ONTARIO, Ore. — Nick Stanford’s 3-point barrage and 25-point afternoon was not enough to overcome Mac-Hi’s first-half deficit to Ontario here Saturday. The Pioneers came up two short at the buzzer and fell to the Tigers, 53-51, in the Greater Oregon League boys basketball game.

Down seven at half, Mac-Hi rallied to outscore Ontario in the third and fourth quarters. Much of the point production came via the hand of Stanford, who nailed six 3s, four in the second half.

"Nick had a heckuva ball game. He played extremely well and shot extremely well," Pioneers coach Nick Ellis said.

"We had the ball last, down two with 14 seconds left," he said. "We drew up a play and had our chances under the basket, but we just couldn’t capitalize.

"The guys turned their defense up a notch in the second half. They made some shots at the end that made it close."

Josh Mejia led the Tigers with 13 points. Mejia picked up the scoring slack from big man Jordan Lang, whom the Pioneers shut down with tight interior defense. In the previous meeting between the two schools, Lang scored 20 points.

The loss locks Mac-Hi in fourth place in the GOL. Ontario remains third.

Mac-Hi takes its 0-5 league, 6-14 overall record on the road again Friday for a matchup with league foe Baker.
