Whitman men's basketball up conference record to 4-6 with win over Willamette

WALLA WALLA — With five players scoring in double figures, Whitman College busted loose from a five-game losing streak with a 103-82 men’s basketball victory over Willamette University Saturday night in Sherwood Center.

With sophomore Brandon Shaw scoring 25 points and junior Justin Artis adding 24 points, eight rebounds and five steals, Whitman upped its record to 4-6 in the Northwest Conference and 10-9 on the season.

Willamette, which got 28 points and 11 rebounds from Cameron Mitchell, slumped to 1-9 in the NWC and 4-15 overall.

Down by seven at halftime, the Bearcats trimmed its deficit to 55-52 early in the second stanza, but Whitman seized control with a 13-4 spurt that pushed its lead to 68-56 with 12 minutes left to play.

Willamette briefly closed to within 10 points before the Missionaries pulled away over the final several minutes.

Shaw drilled 14 of 16 free throws while Artis was four of eight from the 3-point stripe while nailing all eight of his free throws.

Whitman freshman Peter Clark canned six 3-pointers for 18 points. Freshman LuQuam Thompson added 15 points and senior Jordan Wheeler finished with 12.

Willamette got 16 points and nine rebounds from Taylor Mounts and 13 points from Ryan Meehan.

Whitman led for much of the first half, hitting nine of 19 shots from the 3-point line and making 18 of 24 free throws.

Clark did most of the damage from long distance, striking five times from beyond the arc. Shaw made eight of 10 freebies while Artis was six of six.

With the game tied at 40, Whitman outscored the Bearcats 9-2 over the final two minutes to lead 49-42 at the break.

Willamette shot 51 percent from the floor but also committed 27 turnovers. Whitman shot 46.3 percent from the floor and battled the Bearcats to 37-37 stalemate on the backboards.

Whitman hits the road next weekend for games Friday at George Fox and Pacific on Saturday.
