Bells plate five ninth-inning runs to rally past Sweets

Ryan Richardson's stellar, eight-plus-inning effort on the mound is blown away in the final inning as Bellingham wins the series finale, 5-2.

BELLINGHAM - The Walla Walla Sweets led 2-0 from the first inning into the bottom of the ninth, but Bellingham posted runs that counted - and gave the Sweets no chance to recover - capped by a game-winning, three-run homer in the ninth.

It added up to a 5-2 loss and moved the Sweets to 1-2 on the series.

They're 5-13 on the season and end the nine-game roadtrip 1-8.

Walla Walla opened it up in the top of the first with a single off Kevin Kuntz, a walk by Christian Ramirez and Marshall Yanzick hit by pitch.

With bases loaded, Karsten Strieby sacrificed Kuntz home and Ramirez to third - but the double play also outed Yanzick en route to second.

Up one run and with two outs, Ramirez came home on a passed ball with Josh Daniel at the plate. Daniel went down swinging, but it was enough for the Sweets to lead, 2-0.

That stood until the bottom of the ninth.

Sweets pitcher Ryan Richardson opened the inning with an out, then gave up a single to Chris Pierce. Relief pitcher Zach Clanton came in and promptly singled Chris Sturdivant.

Pierce and Sturdivant stole ahead to third and second while Ben Ruff was at bat.

And Ruff hit a two-RBI single to move them home.

Now 2-2, with two outs and Ruff on first, Clanton sat down the next batter but sent Travis Anderson ahead on balls.

And Brady Locker came to bat for Bellingham.

With two outs, two strikes and three balls, Locker kept cool.

He hit a three-run homer - his only hit of the day - bringing Ruff and Anderson home and rounding the bases himself for the 5-2 win.

The Sweets are taking today off before opening a five-game homestand Friday with a three-game series with the Moses Lake Pirates. The Pirates are second in the East Division and 6-11 on the season.
