Walla Walla Pacific overtakes Touchet Valley, Walla Walla Valley falls in tourney


CLARKSTON - Walla Walla Pacific collected all 10 of its hits - four of them extra base blasts - in the final three innings here Monday night and rallied from an early 6-1 deficit to defeat Touchet Valley 7-6 in the first round of the District 5 Little League 11-12 age-division baseball tournament.

The victory moves Pacific into the next round at 5 p.m. today against host Asotin County, which knocked off Walla Walla Valley 5-3 in Monday's other first-round game.

Walla Walla Valley and Touchet Valley square off this afternoon at 3 in the tournament's first loser-out game.

Mitchell Lesmeister slammed a home run and added a single and Isaiah Standard slugged a double and a triple to power Pacific's comeback victory. Cameron Spencer added a double and Justin Olivares two singles to the winners' 10-hit offensive attack.

"We started out kind of slowly," Pacific manager Steve Barker said. "We may have taken this team a little lightly."Once we realized we were in a game, we started hitting the ball with a little more authority. All of our hits came in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings."

Touchet Valley did its damage early, scoring twice in the first inning and four times in the third. Joe Yenney slugged a home run, Kyle Gradwohl added a double and a single, Jacob Dunn contributed a two-bagger and Devin Newman had a single to account for the team's five hits.

"I was proud of our kids," Touchet Valley manager Doug Yenney said. "We're a much smaller league matching up against a bigger league. It felt like we were holding them back the entire game.

Walla Walla Valley was shut out through five innings against Asotin County before striking for three runs in the sixth inning to make the game interesting. Jake Roth opened the rally with a double and Jack Dwyer slammed a home run to account for two runs. Singles by Dillon Courson and Alex Carrera, followed by an error, resulted in the third run, but the comeback fell short.

WW Pacific routs Touchet Valley while WW Valley falls in 9-10 District 5 play

CLARKSTON - Walla Walla Pacific romped past Touchet Valley 23-3 and Asotin County outlasted Walla Walla Valley 16-14 here Monday during the first round of the District 5 Little League 9-10 age-division baseball tournament.

The two winners square off here tonight at 5 in the winners' bracket after the losers tangle at 3 p.m. in the tournament's first loser-out game.
