Lillian La Veta (Gray) Newton, 88, passed away July 2, 2010, at her residence at Jodi's Foster Care in Union, Ore. A visitation will be held at Grays West & Co. Pioneer Chapel Friday, July 9, 2010, from 2-8 p.m. A graveside service will be held Saturday, July 10, 2010, at 2 p.m. at the North Powder Cemetery in North Powder, Ore., with Pastor Garth Johnson officiating. There will be a coffee hour following the service at the home of Clark and Betty Gray in Telocaset, Ore.
Lillian was born July 3, 1921, to John and Erma (Scott) Gray in Ione, Ore. Lillian graduated from Napa Union High School in Napa, Calif., on June 18, 1943. She continued her Nurse Cadet Corps training at Eastern Oregon College in December 1944. She continued her nurses training at St. Anthony's in Pendleton and graduated in September 1947. Lillian met her husband Fred in California and they were married on April 24, 1945, in Coeur d' Alene, Ida. The couple lived in Pendleton while Lillian finished nurse training and eventually settled in Milton-Freewater.
Lillian and Fred traveled extensively exploring the national monuments of the U.S. while she continued her career in nursing. She worked in local hospitals throughout the Northwest.
Lillian enjoyed traveling, walking on the beach, gardening, needle point, embroidery, and sharing her travels with her friends and family. She always enjoyed the times when family and friends would get together at holidays and special occasions.
Lillian is survived by her brothers, Clark Gray of Telocaset, Ore., and Gerald Gray of North Powder, Ore.; sisters, Leona Scott of Wallowa, Ore., Beulah Talley of Lostine, Ore., and Marilyn McIntyre of Union, Ore. Lillian is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Fred; her father John; mother Erma; brother John; sister Lenis; and sister Lela.
