Sweets drop second game to Wenatchee, 7-4

The Sweets give up an early 2-0 lead and 16 hits in the loss Saturday.

WENATCHEE - The Sweets held early leads twice here Saturday before falling to first-place East Division rival Wenatchee, 7-4.

The score might have been much more lopsided given the AppleSox's 16 hits. The Sweets never fell out of contention until a two-run Wenatchee bottom of the eighth pushed the score from a one-run deficit to three - the 7-4 score that would stand up as the final tally.

The Sweets drew first blood in the top of the third. Josh Daniel hit a one-out two-RBI single with the bases loaded to give Walla Walla the early lead, 2-0.

The AppleSox tied it up in the bottom of the same inning with RBIs by Trevor Brown and Eric Peterson.

Walla Walla regained the lead in the top of the fourth thanks to Curtis Dupart's solo homer.

But Zach Sullivan's two-run double in the bottom of the fifth snatched the lead for the AppleSox, 4-3. Another run in the sixth bumped the margin to two.

Walla Walla again closed the gap to one when Denver Chavez scored on a throwing error by Wenatchee shortstop Eric Lane. One run was as close as they would get.

Sweets reliever Mike Richard surrendered two runs in the bottom of the eighth-both after two outs. Richard walked the bases loaded, then gave up runs on a single and another walk.

Jacob Kemmerer took the loss for the Sweets. He is now 1-2 with a 4.62 ERA.

Wenatchee starter Marco Gonzalez picked up the win. He boosts his record to 2-0, though the Sweets did raise his ERA above two to 2.14 on the season.

The win keeps Wenatchee (13-11) a game ahead of red hot Moses Lake, winner of eight of its last ten ball games and in the midst of a four game winning streak.

The loss drops the last place Sweets to 8-17, five-and-a-half games behind Wenatchee.
