Walla Walla Bears win two Saturday in tourney

The Bears will compete in the semifinals today after the wins against La Grande and the Seattle Rainiers.

WALLA WALLA - The Walla Walla Bears will compete today in the semifinals of their annual summer baseball tournament after picking up two victories Saturday at Walla Walla Community College's Tausick Way field.

The Bears shut out La Grande, 10-0, before defeating the Seattle Rainiers, 15-1.

On Friday, Walla Walla was nipped by the Toyota Baseball Club, 2-1.

The Bears play Hanford today at WWCC in one of two semi-final contests scheduled. The other will pit Toyota against Northwest Star Academy at Borleske Stadium. Both games are set for 8:30 a.m.

The semi-final winners will compete for the tournament championship at 1:30 p.m. at Walla Walla Community College while the losers play for places three and four in the tourney at Borleske Stadium, also at 1:30.

Details on the Bears' win over Seattle were not available at press time.

Morgan Maddess collected three hits while Justin Windsor and Jake Fife socked two hits apiece to back the shut-out pitching of Brett Lambert.

Marc Garza gave Walla Walla a 4-0 lead in the second with an RBI single to left.

Run-scoring singles by Maddess and Patrick Stauffer ended the game in the sixth inning due to the mercy rule.

Fife's RBI single in the fifth was the only run Walla Walla could muster in its second tournament game.
