Trial again postponed for brawl suspect

Mario R. Aguayo is accused of assault in connection with a June 2009 gang fight.

WALLA WALLA -- A trial set this week for a man charged in connection with a gang-related melee outside St. Patrick Catholic Church more than a year ago has been postponed again in Walla Walla County Superior Court.

Mario R. Aguayo, 19, of 737 N. Seventh Ave., now is scheduled to face a jury Oct. 14 and 15. The proceedings most recently had been set to begin Monday.

Aguayo has pleaded innocent to charges of riot and second-degree assault. He allegedly armed himself with a bat and hit several people with it shortly before midnight June 13, 2009.

Aguayo was one of at least three people injured in the brawl. He suffered a head injury when he was struck with a bat and punched and kicked, officials said.

Several co-defendants have pleaded guilty to various charges related to the fight and have been sentenced.

Most of the suspects, including Aguayo, were arrested Sept. 3 during a coordinated sweep by area law enforcement officers. Aguayo was released on a bail bond pending the outcome of his case.
