Walla Walla Bears win Sandy Tournament championship


SANDY, Ore. - The Walla Walla Bears ended their Senior American Legion season with a championship at the Sandy Tournament here Sunday.

The Bears defeated the Vancouver Cardinals, 8-6, Saturday to set up Sunday's title matchup against the Vancouver Coyotes. Walla Walla win the tournament with a 4-1 victory over the Coyotes.

"This tournament started well (with wins Thursday and Friday) and we finished strong," Bears coach Blaine Mercado said. "It (the championship) was a really well-played game."

Ryley Croghan pitched the first four innings of the finale, Marc Garza came in for two innings and Bret Lambert closed out the victory.

The Bears, with a 22-18 final record, also watched Jake Fife tally a hit for his 29th straight game with a hit.

"(The season) had it's ups and downs, but these guys came out and played hard, and we had a lot of fun doing it," Mercado said.
