Laurel C. Dennis

College Place, Washington - Laurel C. Dennis, 94, passed away July 17, 2010, at his home in College Place, Washington. He was born December 25, 1915, at the Walla Walla Sanitarium in College Place to Charley and Mary Viola Baldwin Dennis. In 1919, the family moved to Joseph, Oregon, then in 1921 to Cambridge, Idaho, where he started school. In 1928, at the age of 12, they moved to Caldwell, Idaho, where he finished grade school and later graduated from Gem State Academy.
Laurel attended Walla Walla College for three years. Between 1940 and 1941, he worked with his cousin Dallas as an oiler on dragline. On August 1, 1941, he married Virginia Brown in Los Angeles, California, where he was working for Lockheed Aircraft as a Senior Inspector on the P-38 production line. In 1945, he was inducted into the US Army. Following school in Maryland, he was stationed in Japan as a Special Agent in the Counter Intelligence Corps.
Laurel and Virginia moved to Beaverton, Oregon in November, 1946, where he worked as a building contractor. He was manager of Home Builder's Supply Company then he formed his own building and land development company with James Justice. In 1968, he opened Dennis Realty Company, closing that office and retiring following the death of his wife in 1984. He was instrumental in the development of Aloha Medical Dental Square and other office complexes and mini-malls in the area.
He was a member of the Beaverton Masonic Lodge #100, B.P.O.E Lodge #1989 and Scottish Rite of Free Masonry 32. As a young man, he enjoyed boxing and sports. He wrote poetry and enjoyed gardening and crossword puzzles. He loved to go dancing weekly.
