DIXIE -- A more than 60-acre field fire Wednesday destroyed crops on a local farm, officials said.
The fire was reported about 2:40 p.m. at Sherry Farms along Harvey Shaw Road.
Walla Walla County Fire District 8 Chief Bob Clendaniel said the fire likely started from a mechanical problem on a combine. The fire consumed 60 acres of stubble, and about 7 acres of standing wheat. Clendaniel estimated the crop loss at close to $2,000.
The fire burned for close to two hours before being fully contained. Fire District 8 was assisted by the Walla Walla County Fire District 4, 6 and 7.
