Helen Wilson Merklin Haste passed away Sunday, July 25, 2010.
There will be a private graveside service at Mount Hope Cemetery in College Place.
Helen was born June 16, 1921, to Charles and Lucy Wilson. Helen went to her rest in her home at The Bridge Assisted Living Facility in Grants Pass, Ore. Helen married Leroy Haste in 1981.
Helen had worked for many years for Walla Walla (College) University in College Place. She made the pies, soups and sandwiches for patrons of the College Fountain in the early 1950s. Later she became a clerk at the College Store and made lifelong friends there.
In 1989, Helen and Leroy moved from Milton-Freewater to Rogue River, Ore. Together they enjoyed camping, gardening, traveling and visiting with family and friends. Helen was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church from the age of 18.
Surviving are her husband of 29 years, Leroy Haste, of Verbena, Ala.; sons Larry Merklin of Lake Oswego, Ore., and James Merklin of Bossier City, La; daughter Linda Barnes, Rogue River, Ore.; stepdaughter Donna Ernest, Verbena, Ala.; stepson Dorlin Haste, College Place; sisters Betty Plaquet, Walla Walla, and Mary Turfey, Spokane; brother Joe Wilson, Walla Walla; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by her parents; stepson Floyd Haste; and sister Bonnie Fernandez.
