WALLA WALLA — Walla Walla Public Schools officials are advising parents to use extra caution taking children to and from school today after reports of a cougar spotted near the Whitman College campus.
The Walla Walla Police Department reports they received a call about a cougar sighting about 1 a.m. today near Whitman College’s clock tower. Officers reported seeing the adult cougar on Madison Street running west toward the campus. It was then seen going east in Mill Creek channel, where it jumped back out on the north side.
One officer described the cougar as about 5 and a half feet long, weighing about 120 pounds.
Walla Walla Public Schools were contacted as well as the Department of Fish and Wildlife, which is handling the search.
City police officers are asking parents be extra careful with children going to school in the area, and to call 911 immediately if the cougar is seen.
