PULLMAN - The Black Sox 14U team used dominating pitching and key hits to come away with two victories over Pullman on Sunday at Pullman High School.

In game one, pitchers Spencer Locati and Salomon Arellano combined for five strong innings to throw a one-hitter. They also had nine strikeouts and only two walks in the 12-0 shutout victory.

They were given a comfortable lead by their hitters, who rocked the Cougs' starting pitchers for 12 runs, nine hits and six stolen bases.

Spencer Locati led the charge with a home run blast with two on in the Black Sox's five-run second inning.

In the second game, the Black Sox scored early and often with seven of their eight runs coming in the second and third innings. Tim Caudill and Nate Ortiz split five RBIs between them and had extra base hits, with Caudill getting a double and Matthews a triple.

The 8-1 victory included another strong pitching performance by the Black Sox. Winning starting pitcher Ali Buentello had 8 K's and allowed only one run in four innings while Adam Matthews finished the game with 5 K's and zero runs allowed.

"Our pitchers located very well today, which set the tone for the afternoon," coach Mike Postlewait said. "We did a better job at the plate driving the ball when their pitchers made a mistake."

On Saturday, the Black Sox start tournament play in Richland. It will be a five-team round robin event with the Spokane Dodgers, a team from Keiser, Ore., the Tri Cities Vipers and Bellevue competing. The Vipers and Bellevue are coached by ex-major leaguers, Marvin Bernard and Jay Buhner.
