DAYTON -- A 22-year veteran of law enforcement announced his candidacy for Columbia County Sheriff this week.
He will face at least one contender for the position, incumbent sheriff Walt Hessler.
Mark Franklin, who has been with the Columbia County Sheriff's Office since 1999, began his policing career after he was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1971. He first worked as dispatcher for the Walla Walla Police Department, and moved to the Walla Walla County Sheriff's Office in 1979.
During nine of his 12 years with the Walla Walla County Sheriff's Office he was a K-9 handler. He then worked for the San Diego Convention Center Police until 1999 when he returned to the Northwest and began working as a Columbia County sheriff's deputy.
Franklin lives in Dayton with his wife, Shelly, and son, Gus.
