MILTON-FREEWATER -- An early morning fire destroyed an outbuilding near Milton-Freewater today, the third fire in a week, authorities said.
Firefighter Rob Snell with the Milton-Freewater Rural Fire Department said a barn was seriously damaged about 5 a.m. in the 8000 block of Griggs Road. Some chickens that were housed in the barn were not hurt, and no other injuries were reported, he said.
Snell said the fire appears to have been caused by heating equipment, but remained under investigation.
On Friday, the Rural Fire Department also responded to a house fire in the 65000 block of Hurst Lane. The fire, reported about 1 a.m., destroyed the single-family home but all residents made it out safely, Snell said.
The family was being assisted by the Red Cross for temporary shelter and supplies. The cause of the fire was undetermined, and no damage estimate was available this morning, Snell added.
And on May 28, a smaller fire damaged part of a home on Main and Cobb streets, Snell said. The fire was contained to a bedroom and attic area, with electrical wiring believed to have been the cause.
