Mary Rose Chvatal, passed peacefully with her family by her side on Sunday, May 30, 2010 at Providence St. Mary Medical Center.
Funeral Mass will be Friday, June 4, 2010 at 10am at St. Patrick Catholic Church. Rosary will be at 6pm on Thursday, June 3, 2010 at Herring Funeral Home with Sister Helen Mason officant.


Born July 22, 1916 in Pilot Rock, Oregon to Patrick and Teresa Doherty. She grew up on a sheep ranch and graduated from St. Joseph Academy in Pendleton. She worked for Pacific Northwest Bell for several years. It was during this time she met her future husband Joe Chvatal and married August 20, 1949 in Walla Walla. For the next 62 years she resided on the family farm which they purchased as newlyweds. Mary loved all aspects of farming.


Mary's joy in life was her husband, her four children and their spouses, her eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. Mary also enjoyed her time spent with her two sisters and many friends. In them her love and memory will live forever. Mary held a place in her heart for every grandchild and touched each of their lives in a special way. She was very dedicated to her Catholic faith and had a deep devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary which gave her strength and comfort throughout her life. All special family intentions were referred to grandma who was believed to have a "hotline to heaven".


Mary was a member of St. Patrick's Church for over 70 years. She was a Eucharistic Minister to the homebound, past President of the Altar Society, Providence St. Mary Medical Center Auxiliary, 60 year member Court St. Cecila Catholic Daughters of America, Walla Walla Grain Growers, Walla Walla County Cattlemen (Cattlewomen) and Pendleton Grain Growers.


Preceding her in death were her parents, her beloved husband Joe (1975), granddaughter Jamie Leonard (1983) and her sister, Agnes Doherty (2008). She is survived by her four children: Joe Chvatal Jr., Patricia Chvatal, Marilyn Leonard (John Young), Jan Sims (Chuck); her seven grandchildren, Matthew and Mike Leonard, Ryan, Kyle and Janelle Sims, Marinella and Lexi Chvatal; her great-grandchild Jessica Leonard, her sister Joan Doherty Heitstuman and several nieces and nephews.


Donations may be made to the Mary and Joe Chvatal Youth Scholarship Fund which supports Walla Walla Catholic School Youth Scholarship and Walla Walla County Cattlemen's Association Youth Scholarship throughout the Herring Groseclose Funeral Home.
