Former Milton-Freewater resident, Leonard J. Sams 95, passed away at his home in Lakewood, Wash. on June 1, 2010. Funeral services will be held, Tuesday, June 8 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home, 902 S. Main St, Milton-Freewater. Concluding services with military honors will be in the Milton-Freewater Cemetery.


Born May 30, 1915, he was the eleventh of thirteen children to James and Carrie Phillips Sams. He was born on the family farm at Cache Hollow on the Walla Walla River near Milton-Freewater. He served with the Army during WWII from Utah Beach Normandy through Germany including the Battle of the Bulge. He also served in Korea and he retired from the Army at Fort Lewis with over 24 years of service.


He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers; and eight sisters; his wife of 49+ years, Lorelea (Penny) Moore Sams in 1995; and an infant daughter. He is survived by a daughter, Terrell (Terry) French and husband Ken; grandchildren, Ken (Lisa) French Jr, Tammy (Russell) Seaton, Christopher (Misty) French, Kimberly (Joseph) Cancelosi and great-grandchildren, Sabrina French; Brianna, Natalie and Kathryn Seaton; Tyler and Grace French; Madeline and Lydia Cancelosi.
