College Place - Melvin Francis Melton, 91, a resident of Eagle Meadows, 550 E. Whitman Drive, died May 30, 2010, at Walla Walla General Hospital.

Private inurnment will be in Tahoma National Cemetery, Kent, Washington. Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to Mountain View-Colonial DeWitt, 1551 Dalles Military Road, Walla Walla, Washington.

Mr. Melton was born September 28, 1918, in Chillicothe, Missouri, to Melger and Daisy Melton. He received his education in Chillicothe and graduated from high school in 1936. On July 21, 1940, he and Dorothy Kibler were married in Trenton, Missouri. Later, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater and achieved the rank of Sergeant. Over the next 35 years, he worked in furniture retail sales, serving as store manager in numerous locations. He retired in September, 1980.

His interests included fishing, billiards, bowling and golf. He was quite accomplished as a golfer and billiard player. As a golfer, he had two holes-in-one and as a billiard player, he defeated the second-seeded national women's champion in a demonstration match.

He and Dorothy moved to this area in 1987 from Gig Harbor, Washington. He was a member of the Village Seventh-day Adventist Church. He also was a life member of the BPO Elks. His wife preceded him in death on October 4, 2008.

He is survived by two sons: Larry Melton of Walla Walla and Gregory Melton of Hebron, New Hampshire; one brother, George Melton; three grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Swearengen of Chillicothe, Missouri and two brothers: Carl Melton of Kansas City, Missouri and Willie Melton of Shawnee Mission, Kansas.
