PASCO - Walla Walla's Inland Cellular Black Sox bounced back from their first two defeats of the season Saturday in Richland by winning twice here Sunday in a 14-and-under youth baseball tournament at Chiawana High School.
The Black Sox bested Northwest Diamond Sport of Keizer, Ore., 7-3 in their first Sunday outing and then dropped the Kennewick Vipers 8-2 in five innings in their second game. Sunday's sweep boosted Walla Walla's season record to 8-2.
The five-team tournament was evenly matched, with all six participating squads finishing with 2-2 records.
Walla Walla got past Northwest Diamond Sport despite being outhit 10-7 and making a pair of errors in the field. Tim Caudill had a pair of singles for the Black Sox and Joe Duehn and Salomon Arellano contributed a double each. Duehn and Arellano had two runs batted in each.
Ali Buentello pitched six strong innings before needing relief from Adam Mathews, who got the final two outs in the seventh.
The Black Sox were in control of the second game from the start, scoring twice in the first inning and then plating five more runs in the third to take a 7-0 lead.
Spencer Locati led a 12-hit offensive attack with a double and triple. Duehn and Eric Klicker added two singles each and Mathews and Caudill chipped in with a double each. Locati and Caudill were each credited with two RBIs.
"Our guys had the right approach at the plate today," Black Sox coach Mike Postlewait said. "They looked for their pitch, and when they got it good things happened.
"It's great that they came back after a couple of heartbreaking losses (4-2 to the Spokane Dodgers and 2-0 to Bellevue) to win two ball games against two very good clubs."
The Black Sox return to action this weekend in the Lightning Classic wood-bat tournament at LaSalle High School in Yakima.
