WALLA WALLA -- Two people have filed to run for the Walla Walla County Coroner's office.
Prescott resident Virgina Romine and Waitsburg resident Ken Hall have declared themselves candidates, according to the county Auditor's Office. Romine, who is the wife of Walla Walla Sheriff's Capt. Jim Romine, filed her declaration Thursday night and Hall filed today.
Virginia Romine has filed as "prefers Republican Party." Hall has stated no party preference in his filing.
The current office holder, Frank Brown, had not filed for re-election as of mid-morning today. Today is the last day to declare for candidacy.
Brown has come under criticism from Walla Walla County Sheriff Mike Humphreys, Walla Walla Police Chief Chuck Fulton and Walla Walla Fire Chief Terry Thomas. The officials spoke to county commissioners on June 1 about concerns and complaints they said they have had about Brown since he became coroner in 2004. Residents and local health-care providers have also filed complaints with commissioners about Brown's performance.
In a news conference Wednesday, Brown denied he has been responsible for causing problems with the officials and said he is simply following the requirements of state law in doing his job.
