Walla Walla Bears win first two in Hodgin Tourney

PENDLETON - Walla Walla opened the Hodgin senior boys baseball tournament here Saturday by posting a pair of shutouts.

Justin Windsor took care of the Columbia Gorge Hustlers with a five-hit shutout as the Bears posted a 10-0 win.

Kevin Toon kept the string going, tossing a six-hit shutout, and Walla Walla defeated Hanford 2-0 in its second tourney game.

"We have a short roster right now," Bears coach Blaine Mercado said. "We got just what we needed and were able to save some arms for Sunday (today)."

Jake Fife supplied the Bear offense to back Windsor in the opener. Fife blasted three doubles to pace the 10-hit Bear attack as the Bears scored in every inning except the second and fourth.

"Fife had a big game with three doubles," Mercado said. "It seemed like he was on base every inning."

Windsor, who worked mainly in relief this spring for WWCC, went the distance in an efficient five-hit performance.

"Windsor worked fast and kept his pitch count down," Mercado said. "He went right after guys and let his defense work for him."

The Bears got'em on and got them around in squeaking out a 2-0 decision over the Hanford Flames in the Bears' second tourney game.

The Flames out hit the Bears 6-3, but WW figured out how to score a run in the first and fourth without an RBI, and that was all Toon needed.

"We made sure every out counted," Mercado said of his second-game offense. "We got a guy on base and moved him over and scored."

Toon did the rest, as the Wa-Hi senior to be fired the complete game six-hit shutout.

"We know what we'll get every time we send Kevin out there," Mercado said. "He won't walk anyone (no walks Saturday) and he will throw strikes all over the place. He threw less than 70 pitches (in Saturday's win)."

The Saturday wins, coupled with a 5-4 rain-shortened win over Hanford last Thursday, give the Bears a three-game winning streak and improves their record to 5-6.

The Bears play Pendleton at 10 a.m. today at Pendleton High School and will play for the title at 3 p.m. at the same location.
