Walla Walla Sweets defeat Kelowna on Saturday

The Walla Walla team will go for its first series sweep tonight against the Falcons.

KELOWNA, B.C. - Walla Walla blew a 7-1 lead but came back, after Kelowna tied it at 7-7 in the bottom of the ninth, to score in the top of the 10th and pull out an 8-7 extra-inning win in West Coast League baseball action here Saturday night.

Mathew Harjung drew a walk to lead off the decisive 10th for the Sweets. Harjung moved to second on a wild pitch. Kevin Kuntz drew a one-out walk, and with two outs, Danny Poplawski singled to load the bases.

James Stanfield singled to knock Harjung home with what proved to be the winner.

The Falcons, who scored five in the eighth and one in the ninth to tie, refused to go quietly.

Bo Cuthbertson, who hit a grand slam home run in the five-run Falcon eighth, ripped his third hit of the game with a lead off double to start the Falcon 10th.

Alex Allbritton dropped a sacrifice bunt to get Cuthbertson to third with the tying run with only one out.

Zach Clanton, who came on in relief of Sweets starter Brian Biagi in the eighth and gave up the tying run in the ninth, refused to give in to the Falcons.

Clanton enticed a ground ball from Brian Wolfe to a drawn in Sweets' infield for the second out. Clanton ended it by striking out Royce Bolinger and stranding the tying run at third.

The Falcons out hit the Sweets 12-7, but WW took advantage of Falcon control issues in the third to score five times on only two hits - singles from Kuntz and Poplawski. Two walks, a Marshall Yanzick single and an Andy Mathews double plated two more runs in the Sweets' seventh.

On the mound, Biagi went to the eighth with a 7-1 lead, having limited the Falcons to a loan third-inning tally. The Falcons caught up to Biagi and Clanton came on to get out of the eighth and earn the win with a successful 10th.

The win gets the Sweets over .500 at 3-2 and the Sweets will go for their first-ever series sweep tonight in Kelowna.
