Providence St. Mary honored for environmental efforts

WALLA WALLA -- Providence St. Mary Medical Center received an award for reducing mercury from Practice Greenhealth, a national membership organization for health care facilities committed to environmentally-responsible operations, according to press release from the hospital.

The Walla Walla hospital was awarded the Making Medicine Mercury-Free award, for exceptional efforts to rid the health-care sector of mercury, which is commonly used in medical care.

St. Mary has replaced medical devices that use mercury and also sends electronic waste that contains heavy metals through a special disposal process. The efforts are part of a larger initiative led by the facility's Green Team.
