I was employed with the Walla Walla County Sheriff's Office from 1985 to 1990. I worked in the jail for three years and on the road as a deputy for two years. I still work very closely with the Sheriffs Office in my current position as a police officer with the city of Walla Walla.
The current sheriff and his staff are doing an outstanding job serving Walla Walla County. This great service will continue with either Bill White or Jim Romine as sheriff. Both Jim and Bill have proven their commitment to Walla Walla County with their 30-plus years of service with the Sheriff's Office. I would not vote for or endorse them if I felt it would effect the service I would receive as a county resident. The Sheriff's Office is in good shape and provides excellent service to the residents of the county. Jim and Bill have both served as road deputies, sergeants and are now captains with the Sheriff's Office.
I feel the need to comment on the third person running for sheriff, John Turner. This is not a personal attack on John but there are reasons I will not give him my vote. I'm not saying that I would never vote for him but he lacks a lot of experience in very important areas.
John has never served as a law enforcement officer in the Walla Walla area or the state of Washington. If elected he will have to attend training to get his basic certification for Washington state. I want the sheriff of my county to step in and start working not go to training to get a basic certification.
I could not find where John has any experience working as a supervisor when he was a police officer in California. This is another qualification I feel is necessary to take over as a county sheriff.
Mr. Turner has lived in the Walla Walla area for less than 10 years. I do not think this is enough time to know the needs of Walla Walla County.
By reading John's bio I found he has never committed to any one job for very long. I want someone who is committed to police work and the Walla Walla Valley.
I consider the deputies at the Walla Walla County Sheriff's Office my brothers in law enforcement.
The supermajority of the Sheriff's Office employees support Jim Romine or Bill White. If so many of them are supporting their current captains things must be going well at the Sheriff's Office.
I support my brothers in law enforcement and I will keep my vote in house. Please join me in giving local, committed and experienced people our support in Walla Walla County.
