YAKIMA - Columbia-Burbank picked an inopportune time to suffer a bad shooting night here in the opening round of the boys state 1A basketball tournament.

The Coyotes shot 22 percent, 10-of-45 from the floor, for the game and Onalaska remained undefeated with a 46-32 win.

"We had to match their intensity," Coyote coach D.J. Traver said. "I'm not sure we did tonight. They played a little tougher than we did, and we didn't adjust to the physicalness as well as we should have.

"We didn't play a good offensive game," Traver continued. "Which surprised me as we've been playing very good offensively. The biggest shock of the day was that we weren't putting the ball in the hole and we weren't looking to put the ball in the hole."

The loss dropped the Coyotes into a loser out game against Lake Roosevelt at 12:30 today, and moved Onalaska, now 25-0, to a quarterfinal with Cascade Christian at 7:30 tonight.

The Coyotes got a banked trey from Dyllon Smith to grab a 6-5 lead with 3:42 to play in the first. At the 2:30 mark, Trevor Lott's bucket ran the Coyote lead to 8-5.

The Loggers responded as Dalton Ritchey scored four to lead Onalaska on a 6-2 mini run and give the Loggers an 11-10 lead after one.

"We knew going in that Columbia-Burbank was a good team," Logger coach Dennis Bower said. "They've got great quickness and they had been shooting the ball really well over the last three or four games. We knew we would have to come with some type of ‘A' game."

The ‘A' game took the form of Ritchey in the second quarter.

Ritchey's first 3-pointer of the quarter broke a 15-15 tie and gave the Loggers an 18-15 lead with 3:50 left in the half. Ritchey, on the next Logger possession, hit a deuce, 20-15. Ritchey capped his own 8-0 run with a triple to run the score to 23-15 with 2:59 left in the period.

"He (Ritchey) was unbelievable," Bower said. "He took the game over. When he hit the back-to-back 3s, I'm saying he's in the zone tonight."

Despite Ritchey's 10 second quarter points and 17 for the half, the Coyotes got a bucket from Lott and two Neal Schuck free throws to get back within 23-19 at intermission.

"We lost him (Ritchey) twice on the defensive end and he hit those two 3s," Traver said. "A mental lapse here and there and that's what happens. That hurt us, but we battled back to cut it to four at the half."

Neither team got it going in the third. Chad Davis scored three of the Coyotes' seven points, but the Loggers scored eight to grow the lead to 31-26 after three.

Two Logger offensive rebounds led to a Daniel Kelly put back as the Loggers moved the lead to 33-26 with 6:18 left.

Lott countered with a Coyote 3 to get C-B within 33-29. Onalaska had the answers on this night as Taylor Majors got loose for a layin. Before a Davis free throw stopped the bleeding, the Loggers had control at 39-30 with 3:14 left.

"We cut it to four," Traver said about the fourth quarter. "Right after we hit that 3, they got the layin at the other end. That was a momentum killer. Every time we got something going our way, they got something going their way. (And) we didn't get many rebounds going down the stretch. They got a few offensive rebounds that killed us."

Ritchey led all scorers with 25 for the Loggers and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds as the Loggers outrebounded the Coyotes 44-32.

Lott led C-B with nine points, Davis finished with seven and Schuck had six.
