Jefferson Park Pond to be stocked with trout

WALLA WALLA - The city's kids-only fishing pond is getting stocked on Tuesday.

About 1,000 catchable-sized trout under a pound will be dropped into Jefferson Park Pond, along with another 100 trout weighing over a pound, said Park Maintenance Supervisor Joan Schille.

Jefferson Park Pond is a state designated juvenile fishing pond for kids 14 and under. People 15 and over aren't allowed to hold the pole, or even cast for a child. But adults can help bait the hook and remove the fish from the hook.

"It is for kids. The tricky part is telling the 14- from 15-year-olds; good luck with that," Schille said.

The pond is stocked every year by the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife as part of a program to encourage children to grow up liking to fish. Fishing is allowed there year-round from 6 a.m.-9 p.m. A fishing license is not required. Boats and flotation devices are not allowed.

A second fish stocking of 550 trout from the Tucannon Fish Hatchery will take place sometime in April, Schille said.
