Loretta Stonecipher, 98, passed away March 5, 2010, at Regency at the Park, College Place. She was born Dec. 24, 1911, in Walla Walla to Cornelius and Elizabeth McQuade Donovan. She attended school at St. Vincent Academy and graduated in 1930. She then attended and graduated from Walla Walla Business College. She pursued a business career, including employment with the U.S. Department of Labor in Washington, D.C., prior to her marriage.
She married Chester B. Stonecipher, in Walla Walla on June 12, 1937. They farmed together in the Walla Walla and Waitsburg area.
Loretta is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne and Janet Stonecipher of Yamhill, Ore., and William and Linda Stonecipher of Waitsburg; two granddaughters and their husbands and sons, Suzanne Stonecipher Sollors (Joe and son Sean) of Redmond, Carrie Trimble (Mark and sons Ryan and Alex) of Snohomish; three step-granddaughters, Jeri Henrie (Shad and son Zach), near Yamhill, Ore., Jackie Hand of Clearwater, Fla., and July Fitzgerald, of Las Vegas; and several other great-step-grandchildren. She is also survived by four great-grandsons, Ryan Trimble, Alex Trimble, Sean Sollors and Zachariah Henrie; and several generations of nieces and nephews; and her special friend, Carolyn Mendoza, of College Place. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Chet Stonecipher, on Sept. 20, 2002, her parents, brother, John Donovan, sisters, Gertrude Brown, Mildred Powers, Veronica Brown and Ellen Beechinor.
She was dedicated to many activities through the years, including St. Mark Alter Society in Waitsburg, and as an adult leader in her sons' Scout activities. She was a life member of Saint Mary Community Hospital Service League, member of Chapter CN of PEO, Assumption Church and Assumption Church Women's Group. She was an excellent seamstress and made clothes for her family in the earlier years. She took great satisfaction in the many hours she spent with her yard and beautiful flowers. She was a fine cook for family and friends as well as large harvest crews. As a couple, she and Chet offered help and guidance to struggling young people and couples. They also enjoyed several trips overseas and sharing them with others when they returned - including ethnic cooking.
Viewing visitation will be held on Thursday, March 11, 2010, from 2 p.m. until after the Rosary at the Herring Groseclose Funeral Home. The Rosary will be recited Thursday, March 11, 2010, at 7:30 p.m. at the Herring Groseclose Funeral Home with Father Tim Hays officiating. The funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, March 12, 2010, at 11 a.m. at Assumption Catholic Church with Father Tim Hays celebrating. Interment will follow in the Catholic Section, East Garden of Mountain View Cemetery. Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to the Walla Walla Catholic School Endowment Fund or the Christian Aid Center through the Herring Groseclose Funeral Home, 315 W. Alder, Walla Walla, WA.
