Evelyn Jean Carlton passed away March 9, 2010, at home with her family by her side.
The funeral service will be Saturday, March 13, 2010, at 2 p.m. at Harvest Christian Center, 653 Wagon Road (on Highway 12), Dayton. Pastor Greg Brownell of the United Brethren Church will officiate.There will be a private interment. Memorial contributions may be made to the Walla Walla Community Hospice in care of Herring Grosclose Funeral Home.
Evelyn was born Dec. 18, 1944, in Dayton, to Thomas Earl Groom Sr. and Thelma Bessie (Witt) Groom. She grew up in Dayton and attended Dayton schools. She was raised in a large, close-knit family and attended the United Brethren Church. She was known as "Hubba" to family and friends, a name given to her by her older brothers and sisters when she was a baby. Hubba married Dick Carlton in Coeur d' Alene, Idaho, on Jan. 23, 1987. They lived in Milton-Freewater before moving to Walla Walla in 1996. Hubba really enjoyed being with their children and grandchildren. She and Dick were members of the Walla Walla Cruisers Car Club and had fun showing their '48 Chevy car and '56 Ford pickup. They also liked to go on camping trips with their motorhome, traveling to visit relatives and spending time with their family and friends. Hubba loved people, especially the elderly and children (and they loved her), and laughing with her lifelong friend Gloria. Hubba was a homemaker, but also worked several years at Noah's Ark Day Care and for the Senior Chore Service. She was a member of the local multiple sclerosis support group.
Evelyn is survived by her husband, Dick Carlton; her daughters, Shawney (Tate) Garbe, of Zillah, Wash., and Kelli Tate of Pasco; her step- daughter, Christine (Carlton) Erb and husband Jim of Weston M,Ore.; and step-sons, Richard Carlton, of Long Beach, Calf.; eight grandchildren, Telse (Garbe) Buske, Johannah (Garbe) Buske, Annika, Tanner, Hunter, Trevor and Tavis Garbe and Celeste Jones; four step-grandchildren, Skylar and Angelina Erb, Cameron Carlton and Tyler Carlton; her brothers, Bud Groom, Dell Groom, Phillip Groom and Jack Groom and their spouses, all of Dayton; her sisters, Mona Waliser, of Milton-Freewater, and Bitsy Livingston, of Pasco and their spouses; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceeded in death by her parents, Earl and Thelma Groom; two sisters, Bess Bly and Earlene Boggs; an infant brother, and her son-in- law, Otto Garbe.
