Bulldogs hold off Irish, 11-5, despite being outhit, 10-9

HERMISTON - DeSales outhit Hermiston 10-9, but the Irish couldn't match the Bulldogs on the scoreboard in a 11-5 season-opening non-conference prep baseball loss here on Tuesday.

After taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning, DeSales fell behind 7-1 after two frames and never caught up.

Pat Richard and Brandon Ariellano each hit safely twice for the Irish, and Victor Mata earned praise from coach Kim Cox for his relief work in the mound.

"Victory came on in the second inning and did a good job,"

Cox said. "He was unlucky in that his first pitch was hit out of the park, but after that he settled down and threw very well.

"He located his pitches very well, and we were pleased with that," Cox said. "We also hit the ball pretty well. We had four guys with RBI singles. We still have some work to do with our pitching."

The Irish play LaSalle at DeSales on Friday with a 2:30 p.m. start.
